Voicemail to email problem

Postby Rondog » Tue May 19, 2009 11:40 am

Hi guys, just testing out Switchvox and I absolutely love it so far. The only problem I have encountered.

I have it configured to send my voicemail messages to email. But the email does not come through, however, when I send the test email within 'Voicemail settings' under 'System Setup' the test message works as expected.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Have you confirmed there is a message in your inbox when you leave a test voicemail?

Do you have the voicemail notifications enabled in your phone extension settings? Do you have your email address setup in your server extension settings and also the user extension settings?

Yes, a voice message comes through to voiceinbox when I check using a web browser to my extension, or the actual phone.

These options below are all enabled in phone extension settings.
Voicemail, Web Tool Access, Voicemail Attachments, Block Calls, Secret Code, Unpark Calls, Forward Calls, Cascade Calls and Ringall Option.

When you say 'Server Extension Settings' are you refering to the Voicemail Settings page in Switchvox webadmin system. If so, then yes, I am using my ISP username/default email address as the from address, and my ISP's outgoing mailserver as the Outbound SMTP Server.

User extension settings is also using the same address, but I have tried it with a third party email adress to no avail.

Also, I just noticed when I try to update Voicemail settings, I get this error message:

Voicemail Settings ERROR: unable to set smtp settings

Even after rebooting the server, could this have anything to do with it?

When you log into the server admin https://hostname/admin and modify the extension (Extensions > Modify Extensions > Modify (ext)), those features that are enabled are for what the user is allowed to do. You can grant or deny those permissions for that user on that extension. Make sure the email address is specified here. While still on the server admin, under System Setup > Voicemail settings, you'll need to fill in a "From" address (this can be a bunk email address in most cases, I use switchvox@domainname.com), the SMTP server will need to be also filled in. This needs to be correct and valid. Username and password I dont think needs to be correct, as mine is not. I may have just used the Switchvox Server admin username and password, I dont remember. I may have even left it default

If you log into the web admin for the actual extension https://hostname/main, log in with the extension credentials, you will also need to set up the email address under Settings > Modify Account

I hope this helps

All those details are correct.

I am using Switchbox 1.0 Free if that makes any difference

That is the exact same version I am using and it works perfectly. You've got to be missing something. What is your SMTP server?

SMTP mail server for all my email accounts in Outlook on all workstations is mail.internode.on.net

Which is how it is setup in Voicemail Settings,

However like I said, when I try to update this page it gives an error as I mentioned previously. Is this a known bug?

I am confident your problem is SMTP related. I just ran a few tests. When I use your SMTP server, it said it's not a valid server. There is only two reasons I would get this. 1) There is no server with this DNS name or 2) the server is in your internal network, making it private to the outside world.

Here is what you can do. Remove the username and password. Leave it blank, then run the test. Next Find your ISP's SMTP server. If you have a business account for Cox in California, it's going to be smarthost.coxmail.com, if you have a residential account it might be SMTP.west.cox.net. So make sure you get the right one. These servers are geographical and also dependent on if you have a business or residential account, so make sure you get the right one. You can google search and get a list of all ISP provided SMTP servers.

I used smarthost.coxmail.com in mine with no username and password and it worked.

You think it is SMTP related even though the test message sent correctly? OK. Umm my ISP is Internode, they're Support page says their outgoing mailserver is mail.internode.on.net see step 5 here:

http://www.internode.on.net/support/gui ... look_2003/

I'm about to reinstall to try some different things.

Do you have problems with all extensions?

Could it be that the emails are going into your spam folders or your server side spam filters blocking them? I'm just gasping for ideas and trying to help troubleshoot.

Change your voicemail notification email "from" address to your address, just to see if that works.

PBX@localhost.localdomain is probably what is causing the problem.

voicemail to email issues

Postby Richard Neville » Sat Aug 15, 2009 1:37 am

I just thought id let you know, I have setup a few of of these free switchvox systems, and i have encountered a few issues, but the outgoing voicemail issue I found today was because of INTERNODE...
I setup a system at the office, and took it home for some afterhours diags and it refused to work, a "connection diagnostic" shows that there was an issue communicating to mail.internode.com.au via port 25.. but when i get back to office and setup with mail.bigpond.com the whole system worked again.

hours of testing wasted because internode do something funky :)

just thought id add that for future reference (as i found this post searching for the solution)
