Please help with my dialplan!

Postby chrisdipetta » Fri Jul 06, 2012 2:35 pm

OK, I'm completely new to PBX's (and this is the first phone system I've installed).

My SMB 65 is up and running, I have my SIP trunk working, and extensions configured.

This is replacing an old keyswitch system, and the new Switchvox system is currently being tested before we port over our exisitng numbers.

The vast majority of our calls are outbound, rather than internal extensions, so I really want to eliminate the "Dial 9" requirement for outside calls. I was told this could be done, but I have no idea how. My emails to Digium have gone unanswered?

How do I do this? Is it just a change to the dial plan, or do the outbound rules also need to be changed?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You will need to change both your outgoing calls rules and your dialplan.

What kind of phones are you using? This will have a big impact on syntax of your dialplan... If you're using Polycom phones, here's an example of the default Polycom digitmap that does not require a 9 when dialing out:

[0-8]xxx|911|411|611|011xxx.T|1xxxxxxxxxx|[2-9]xxxxxx|*xx.T|[0-8]xx.T

This should work just fine... but I do tend to prefer using the universal digitmap if I cannot use the default settings. The universal is:

x.T|*xx.T

If you're using Digium phones, the above should also work for you, but you will need to add your timeout setting after each ".T". Such as:

x.T3|*xx.T3

For your outgoing call rules, simply modify them to not look for the 9, and make sure that your digits to trim is modified as well. (will most likely go from trim 1 to trim 0.)

The first rule in your dialplan is [0-8]xxx. That will dial the phones when he hits 4 digits of the number. You would have to put a .T after it to allow longer numbers to be dialed.

Jesse,

You are absolutely correct... the "[0-8]xxx" portion of the digit map is the default string for internal extension dialing. Evidently I neglected to update this portion when I suggested it's use on a system which does not require a 9 to dial out.

Though, this mistake does highlight one of the multitude of reasons that I prefer to use the universal digit map if forced to configure a system that will not use a 9 to dial externally.

Not only was this the answer, but the answer I got from Digium via my "gold" support was completely wrong.

Thanks so much for this, you saved me a ton of trial and error!
