Polycom phone issue?

Postby wanavacation » Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:03 am

Greetings!

We have recently deployed close to 200 new Polycom phones in our corporate office and are connected back to stacked Extreme X450e's PoE switches and served by a Digium Switchvox SMB running the very latest code. The ports on the switches are configured with both data and a voice vlan's, voice is tagged and the phone get's it's vlan info from DHCP on boot via option 128.

Out of the 200 phones we have 20-30 phones that continually stop passing the data vlan (untagged vlan) through to the computer and/or will loose it's configuration randomly and we cannot re-profile them through Switchvox.

So my question to you all is... has anyone experienced any of the above issues before and if so have you been able to solve these issues? Any thoughts at all would be awesome. Have you had to make any configuration changes in your switches to better support your VoIP phones? What tips would you give to maximize performance on the network that we should be considering (I already have QoS active). It seems like the latest update to SV has made support for Polycom more fragile, has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks for your thoughts!!

Factory wiping the phones and re-applying firmware have any effect?

If you hard code the VLAN in the phones ethernet menu does it repeat the issue?

We have been defaulting them almost every time they flake out. Seems to last for a week before bombing out again. I've also tried hard setting the VLAN and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Very odd issues for sure!

Is it always the same phones?

I have never had an issue with IP 335's but I never had 200 of them provisioned at once.

have you tried a different switch?

Do you have a managed switch you can put one of these on and see if you can reproduce it (Something other than an Extreme Networks Device)?

Personally I do not like 330 and 335 models - I used to have problems with them all the time and not on Switchvox (on hosted solution). Reformat the phone (reset to defaults and reformat the memory). Setup a separate ftp server with the default firmware from Polycom, please make sure that the firmware you are applying to the phones is supported by Switchvox. I was suggested this solution by Polycom because some of the phones might have corrupted firmware. Other than that if the phones are losing configuration it might mean that there is something hardware related - have you tried Polycom, or Polycom forums ?
