SMB 5.5.3 breaks manual VLAN setting / D40 & D50s reboot

Postby hiltonmw » Mon Apr 30, 2012 1:45 pm

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. We've just upgraded to the Switchvox SMB 5.5.3 release. Our D70, D50 and D40 phones on 5.5.2 were working fine.

After upgrading to 5.5.3 - the phones booted up and said "downloading new firmware" (as Digium included a new firmware for these phones with release 5.5.3).

The D70 came back after the firmware update without problem.

The D40 and D50 were stuck in a constant reboot cycle. They'd slowly boot up then show "No IP Address" on the screen and then would reboot again.

With some digging, I found that if I set the VLAN setting on the phone to "NONE" (it's normally set to MANUAL) the phone boots up and works fine on our DATA VLAN (we've set it up this way for testing). Many of our customers do not allow phone traffic on their DATA VLANs so this is not a sufficient work-around.

Essentially, I just wanted to know if anyone else can independently confirm or deny this as a bug?

So, I believe the problem is the following, with the latest firmware:
The D70's work okay with VLAN setting set to MANUAL or NONE
The D40s and 50s go into a constant reboot cycle if set to MANUAL. IF I set them on a switch port that's already tagged or if you set them to NONE the work fine.

Not sure if you're posting on LI as well, but there are other reports of 40/50s rebooting after updating 5.5.3. I'll post this topic in the thread.

I just updated our demo system, and our phones (1-D70, 1-D50, 2-D40's) are configured with the vlan manually tagged. The upgrade process went fine, and the phones updated and rebooted correctly... all is working well.

Thanks all!

Finally, we did locate the problem. It was isolated to one of our switches - a 3Com 2924 PWR that we use in our conference room when we run demonstrations. Spanning Tree was enabled by default. When we disabled it the problem went away. I'm not sure if this would still be a problem if spanning tree had been configured properly (as opposed to just being on by default).

This did not affect our Polycoms or the D70, but did affect the D40 and D50... I can only assume that it is specifically related to an incompatability between STP on that model of switch and the ethernet adapter used in the D40 and D50 (I assume the D70 uses a different adapter because it is GB) .

Also interesting is why STP wasn't tripped on the previous firmware version for the D40 and D50 phones, but is now.
