Voice quality improvements

Postby mike_b2 » Sun Apr 22, 2012 3:28 pm

Is there a way to improve the quality of the transmission? Most of the time it works fine on my system, but once in a while people on the other end complain about noise or that they can hardly understand me. I also have a Vonage system on the same network connection, and I noticed that I have a noticeable decrease in quality when someone uses that phone at the same time. Right now, the signal comes from the cable modem, runs to a firewall/router. This router is the main hub in the system, and the signal goes from there to another small hub with 2 PCs attached, one of them a file server, the other the Asterisk box, plus a NAS. There are a bunch of other devices attached, all of them branching off from the firewall/router. Since I can often understand the other party without any problems, I don't think it is the internal wiring. What do you think?

What is the nature of this noise ? Is this some static noise that might be generated in the network/cables ? If so, you can try:
a. Try testing the components in your network to isolate the problematic component.
b. Try using a noise reduction software like PBXMate. Please note that this software will not help in case the problem is located outside of your network.

Buy a network connection with a larger uplink speed.

Prioritise RTP on all your routers, especially the router connected to the DSL modem, etc.
